This photo was sent to us by Marcel Klema of Brantford, Ontario, Canada in March of 2002.  Marcel lived in Kosice, Slovakia (formerly Czechoslovakia) at the time of this famous UFO sighting, circa 1987, before he moved to Canada.  The object appears to be hovering above the tree line above the Slanske Hills.  Multiple sightings in the Kosice area were common in the late 1980's, occurring both day and night.

In 2003, Marcel returned to Kosice for a visit and was surprised to learn that this object is not a UFO, but actually a lookout tower!  Here's an excerpt of the update we just received from him:

"I have recently contacted your staff to inform that this sighting is illegitimate and the object is actually a lookout tower. My family and I moved to Canada from Kosice, Slovakia around the same time as my friend wrote to me about this 'UFO' they saw one night, along with other people. This UFO is a lookout tower that was being constructed, and that one night they tested the lights on it. The picture you have is a photo of that lookout tower taken in late evening. It began circulating because someone wanted to sensationalize what some people already thought was a UFO. I recently visited the city of Kosice and saw, as well as visited this lookout tower."

We appreciate the update.  This UFO sighting is a prime example of how a common object can be mistaken for an extraterrestrial object.  Two enlargements of the deceptive photo appear below:
