Strange lights

Location: Australia, Victoria, Bannockburn. Time & Date. 12:30am Sunday 1st May, 2011.

Whilst driving along the highway on my way home, above the tree tops I noticed a strange light moving parallel across the horizon. At first I thought it was a helicopter however it moved to quickly to be a helicopter. I then thought maybe a plane (strange I thought it was flying a little low to be a plane). But then it moved closer to my vehicle and the what I thought had been a great distance between us had in fact only been a few metres.
The object had created the strange illusion of being far away when in fact it was extremely close. It's light was a dark orange/red. Orb like in shape. In the brief moment it was there... it was gone. Disappeared in a blink of an eye.
