I was with a group of four friends and we were driving across half the country (LA to Houston) in a 1970 Ford F-Series.

We took it in turns to drive the truck, which to be fair was on its last legs. My 'shift' had ended, so I sat in the back and started to sleep. A little while later we I woke up and noticed that we were heading down a mud track in the middle of no-where. My friend who was driving was positive that it was a shortcut. After a minute or two of driving down this track we heard a loud hissing sound, not from the truck, but from outside. We looked out and it look us a little while to notice a small pot shaped bare metallic object in the sky.
It was a couple of thousand feet up, and was maintaining a set distance away from us.We continued to watch it for a further 3 or 4 minutes and then it shot off ahead of us leaving sparks in the sky where it had been, like a firework.

Baffled, we continued driving. About half an hour later we stopped off at a small bar, but left pretty soon as it was out of everything.

We continued down the track for another 8 miles and saw a metallic building a few hundred feet away from the side of the track. We thought it might have been a bar or caravan. We parked up, and walked towards it, but quickly noticed it was not a bar. It was the UFO we had seen before. There was a small 'perspex' window on its side and we could see movement inside. It looked like people with white helmets.

We got a close enough look at it, and it then shot into the air at an uncontrolled fashion. I think this could have been man made as it looked like something from a cheap 60s tv show. This in mind though, I am pretty sure i've never seen a man made object have this kind of perfomance.
The 'UFO' just shot a few thousand feet into the air like a missile. Also, who were the people in the white helmets?

I am currently studying modern history at Dartmouth College so please don't think I'm a hill-billy wasting my time.
