Was this in San francisco? My friend called me this morning and reported seeing a similar light/lights that were slow drifting in the southern sky of San Francisco for the same duration of time at around 5:50 - 6:30 am on the 2nd of Sept. Using binoculars the "star" or "plane" options were ruled out because of it's eliptical shape and slow movement.
