Avatar:  An avatar is a picture that you may associate with your username.  When an avatar is included with a user login, the image is displayed above the username's handle in the user list.  The image must be currently hosted on the web. Avatars are added by entering the web address (URL) of the image you wish to display. Be sure to include the complete file path to the image (not just the website address) or the avatar will only display an empty outline of a picture, with a red 'X' in the upper left hand corner. Avatars are provided only for use on this website.

Frequently asked Questions and Answers about Avatars:

Can I use a larger picture?  Yes, it will automatically be reduced to fit into a standard size, 75 X 100 pixels.  Standard 8 X 10, and 5 X 7 inch photos will reduce nicely.

Can I use a smaller picture?  Yes, it will automatically be enlarged.  Please note that some distortion may occur, especially if your photos are taken with a horizontal layout (as opposed to a photo with vertical layout such as a portrait).

What is the URL of my image?  It depends upon how it is filed on your web site.  You must include the URL of your website and add a trailing slash (/) followed by the name of the picture file as an extension to your URL.  For example, suppose that your web address is http://members.aol.com/~mysite.  If you uploaded your pictures onto your website and you want to use picture5.gif as your avatar, the URL for picture5 would be http://members.aol.com/~mysite/picture5.gif.  If your picture file is in a folder, you must also include the name of the folder followed by a trailing slash before the picture file name.  To continue with our example, if you uploaded picture5.gif into a folder named 'pictures', you would enter http://members.aol.com/~mysite/pictures/picture5.gif.  Any additional folders that are in the pathway to your image must also be included as part of your URL.

What if I don't have my own web site?  The image you use for your avatar does not technically have to be on your own site, you can actually use pictures from other sites as well.  If you have a friend that has a website, perhaps he or she may be able to upload an image for you.  Alternatively, you may also contact other website owners for permission to link to their images for use as your personal avatar.
